In the father’s day history first time The Father’s Day celebration was held by Sonora Smart Dodd at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Her father, William Jackson Smart the civil war veteran, was a single parent who raised his six children there. Sonora Smart Dodd first proposed the idea of celebrating Father’s Day at Old Centenary Presbyterian Church (now Knox Presbyterian Church) and she was also a member of Old Centenary Presbyterian Church.

After hearing a celebration about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909 at Central Methodist Episcopal Church, Sonora Smart Dodd told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday to honor them and she suggested June 5, her father’s birthday but the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in  June because the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons. on June 19, 1910, the first Father’s Day, “sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city”  because Several local clergymen accepted the idea of celebrating The Fathers Day.

In 1920s, Sonora Smart Dodd was busy in studying at the art institute Chicago. So she stopped promoting the celebration, even in spoken, it faded into relative obscurity. When she returned to Spokane in 1930s, she again started promoting The Fathers Day celebration and rising awareness about The Fathers Day celebration at a national level. The trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example tobacco pipes, the manufacturers of ties  and many traditional present for fathers, were started helping Sonora Smart Dodd for promoting The Fathers Day celebration.

Sonora Smart Dodd had the help of the Father’s Day Council to consolidate and systematize the holiday’s commercial promotion. The Father’s Day Council was founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers. The Americans resisted the holiday for its first few decades, viewing it as nothing more than an attempt by merchants to replicate the commercial success of Mother’s Day, and sarcastic attacks and jokes and newspapers frequently featured cynical. This is very profitable for all merchants that a new celebration is added in the year. However, the said merchants remained resilient and even incorporated these attacks into their advertisements. the Father’s Day Council wrote, By the mid-1980s,  ” For all the men’s gift-oriented industries, Father’s Day has become a Second Christmas.”
